ActivityMcMahon was born in Melbourne, Australia and was educated there before going to Magdalen College, Oxford. He worked at HM Treasury (1953 - 1957), the British Embassy in Washington (1957 - 1960) and was a Fellow and Tutor in economics at Magdalen before joining the Bank in 1964 as an economics adviser. McMahon was an Adviser to the Governors (on economics) from 1966 to 1970 when he was appointed an Executive Director, firstly with responsibility for economics, and then for overseas affairs (from 1973). In 1980 McMahon succeeded Jasper Hollom as Deputy Governor. He left the Bank in 1986 to go to Midland Bank, where he was Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive (1986 - 1987) and Chairman and Chief Executive (1987 - 1991).
