ActivityEducated at Eton and Kings College, Cambridge (he only attended for one year), Norman spent his early career at Martin's Bank, Brown, Shipley & Co., and Brown Brothers in New York. He served with the Army in the South African War (1900 - 1901) and was awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO). Norman's time at the Bank of England started when he joined the Court as a Non-Executive Director in 1907. He left Brown, Shippley in 1915 and became Assistant to the Deputy Governor. By 1918 Norman was himself elected Deputy Governor and he then became Governor in 1920. He remained in post until 1944, when he had to retire on health grounds, his 24 years being the longest period that anyone has served as Governor. Norman died in 1950.
