Professor Timothy Besley, Member, Monetary Policy Committee

Professor Timothy Besley was appointed as an external member of the Monetary Policy Committee with effect from 1 September 2006.  The Monetary Policy Committee is responsible for setting interest rates to meet the Government’s inflation target.

Timothy started his career as Assistant Professor of Economics and International Affairs at Princeton University from 1989 to 1995. From 1995 onwards he joined the London School of Economics where he is now Kuwait Professor of Economics and Political Science, a position that he retains part-time along with his duties on the Monetary Policy Committee.

Timothy was educated at Oxford University (B.A & M.A Philosophy, Politics and Economics, M.Phil Economics & D.Phil Economics) where he was a Fellow of All Souls College.  He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and of the British Academy.  He is also a Research Fellow at the IFS and a member of the Institutions, Organisations and Growth program of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.  He was the 2005 winner of the Yrjö Jahnsson award in economics.

Timothy is married with two sons and lives in South West London.
