Names of the Fallen, G to L

Following the end of the First World War, a Memorial Scheme was set-up to discuss how best to remember the Bank staff who had sacrificed their lives in the First World War. One of the suggestions that was agreed upon by the Committee was the erection of a memorial statue of St Christopher and the Holy Child in the Bank’s Garden. However, it was felt by the Committee that the statue would be incomplete without the full names of those who died, and so it was proposed that the names be inscribed in bronze. As this would incur further expense, a meeting chaired by Sir Ernest Harvey  was held on the 17 March 1921 in the Court Room, which sanctioned an appeal to raise the necessary additional funds. The names of those engraved on the plaques with the surnames Gl to Li have been transcribed below.
On Armistice Day 1921, the statue was unveiled to Bank staff in a ceremony that took place in the Bank’s Garden. A full-size image of the memorial statue with the bronze plaques can be viewed via the related links.
