Key events in 2013


18 December

The Bank announced that the next £5 and £10 banknotes would be printed on polymer, a thin flexible plastic film, rather than on the cotton paper used for notes currently in issue.

25 November

The Bank announced the passing of Robin Leigh-Pemberton, Lord Kingsdown. He was Governor of the Bank of England from 1983 to 1993.


30 July

The Bank announced that the public could now access historic Bank publications and documents as part of the first phase of an Archive digitisation project

26 July

HM Treasury announced that Her Majesty The Queen had agreed, on the recommendation of the Chancellor and the Prime Minister, to appoint Sir Jon Cunliffe as Deputy Governor of the Bank of England with responsibility for Financial Stability, starting on 1 November 2013.
24 July

The Bank announced that Jane Austen will appear on the £10 note, The Austen note will be issued as a £10 note, within a year of the Churchill £5 note, which is targeted for issue during 2016. 
11 July

The Bank launched its first App, featuring a virtual tour of its famous Threadneedle Street building.

The Bank announced that Sir Winston Churchill would appear on the next Bank of England banknote. The plan was for the Churchill note to be issued as a £5 note and that it would be issued during 2016.
