Who we are

As United Kingdom’s central bank our mission is to promote the good of the people of the UK, by maintaining monetary and financial stability.

Our balance sheet – the assets we hold and the liabilities used to fund them – is one of our most important tools for delivering monetary and financial stability. And that is where the Market, Banking, Payments and Resolution Division comes in.

If you are looking for work that is of national importance for our economy and the financial system, there are many exciting opportunities for you to join our team of more than 200 professionals from both the private and public sectors as well as different countries and backgrounds.

Markets Directorate

Markets are a vital part of the UK’s financial system, whether in the sterling markets or managing the UK’s official foreign exchange reserves, we play a vital role in implementing the nation’s monetary policy. From influencing financial markets, to risk management, and market intelligence, if you want to work in the heart of the UK’s financial system this is a dynamic and vibrant part of the execution of the Banks policies.

Banking Directorate

We provide banking services to over 130 overseas central banks. We do this to help support the reserve management requirements of central banks and to support the tools of global financial stability that use the operational network of central banks. This reflects sterling’s longstanding role as a reserve currency. By offering these services to central banks, it allows them to operate safely in sterling markets, reducing the credit risk that they would otherwise face when holding assets at, or transacting directly with, commercial banks. In turn, this supports international financial stability.
