The Inflation Chart

The history of inflation in the UK has been an eventful one. Our interactive chart on inflation picks out over a dozen key episodes in the course of inflation since 1790. All of these were important in their own time, but still have relevance to our lives today. You can find out about the Government's target for low inflation, in what year the Bank of England became independent, and when banknotes were redeemable in gold.
