'Mother' Die

'Mother' die

Object name Die
Title 'Mother' die

'Mother' die used to create multiple printing plates, reading ‘I promise to pay…’.

The die is used to create the plate, which will appear with the text in reverse. Every Bank of England note includes the promise to pay the bearer the value of that banknote.

The Bank will no longer exchange them for gold, but Bank of England notes retain their face value for all time. This means that genuine notes, however old, can always be exchanged for current notes of the same value.
