Amusing, Shocking, Informing
The exhibition of cartoons and caricatures ranged from the 18th century to the present day. From James Gillray, published in 1797 to Steve Bell published by The Guardian rather more recently. Cartoons and caricatures of the Bank, its work or its denizens represent important facets of the institution's history. It was in a 1797 Gillray cartoon, for example, that the Bank's nickname, "The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street" first appeared in print.
