The Bank of England and its staff during World War II

Marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, this exhibition illustrated how the work and life of the Bank continued in spite of the Blitz and the evacuation of some offices to locations outside London.

Learn how the Bank ensured that its essential work continued, including printing and issuing banknotes and overseeing London's financial markets.

Discover how staff in Threadneedle Street, as many as a thousand at a time, worked 2 or 3 days in a row, sleeping overnight in the Bank's vast vaults.
