Business as Usual
The Bank of England and its staff during World War II
10th March – 8 September 2005
Marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, this
exhibition illustrated how the work and life of the Bank continued
in spite of the Blitz and the evacuation of some offices to
locations outside London.
Learn how the Bank ensured that its essential work continued,
including printing and issuing banknotes and overseeing London's
financial markets.
Discover how staff in Threadneedle Street, as many as a thousand
at a time, worked 2 or 3 days in a row, sleeping overnight in
the Bank's vast vaults.

See how some of the Bank's work was moved - to Hampshire - with
lucky employees there enjoying the countryside's comparative tranquillity.
A
fascinating collection including photographs, documents and personal
memorabilia highlight the workaday life of Bank staff in wartime.
