The Tenner
(from 30 March 2009)
The £10 denomination first appeared 250 years ago and a new display chronicles the evolution of the design of the £10 note since then.
Did you know, for example, that the printed signature of the Chief Cashier did not appear on any of the Bank's notes, including the tenner, until 1870? Or that this year is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin (who is featured on the back of the current £10 note) and that his most famous work, 'On the Origin of the Species', was published 150 years ago?
The display includes the earliest known Bank of England £10 note, the original artwork for the Dickens and the Florence Nightingale notes as well as the book recording the decision to issue £10 (and £15 notes!) in March 1759.
