1782   1782: The Bank expands westwards

It was clear from the Gordon Riots (1780) that the Bank was vunerable to attack from the roof of the church of St Christopher-le-Stocks which lay to the west and adjacent to the Bank's premises. After the appropriate legislation had been passed the church was deconsecrated and demolished. This allowed the westward expansion of the Bank. The origin of the Bank's Garden Court lies in the churchyard of St Christopher-le-Stocks.
