Conference - The Future of Payments,
19 - 20 May 2005
The Bank of England hosted an international conference on ''The Future of Payments" on the 19 & 20 May 2005 (for full details, please see the agenda). The conference aimed to broach some forward-looking issues on how payment systems and payments media may look in the future and the implications of this for public policy in general and central banks in particular. As background for the conference a paper was written - "Central banks and payment systems: Past, present and future" - that discusses the development of payment systems and central banking, considers a selection of current public policy issues in payments, and offers some tentative ideas about the future direction of payment systems and central banks involvement therein.
