Click here to launch the Market Operations TimelineOver the course of the Bank’s history, its official market operations have changed and evolved. The market operations timeline shows a selection of the changes and events which have occurred since 1979. Some of these changes have transformed how the Bank interacts with the financial markets, whilst others have been more incremental.

The changes/ events fall into four categories:

Operating Framework: changes to the framework of the Bank’s operations including the introduction of new ones.
Events: changes to a particular Bank operation, the first use of a variation to the operating framework or an event impacting the Bank’s operations.
Policy regime: changes to the macroeconomic framework the Bank operates within.
    Infrastructure: changes to market infrastructure.

These categories can be turned on/off using the key at the top of the timeline.

The chart at the bottom of the timeline details the path of the Official Bank of England rate
