The lists of banks and building societies published by the Bank of England, including the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), are intended to be used solely as a guide. These lists will be published on a monthly basis.
There is no definition of a 'bank' in the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (as amended by the Financial Services Act 2012) (FSMA). However, as previously published by the Financial Services Authority (FSA), the list below contains regulated firms which businesses and the public would think of as banks. The list is based on the definition of 'bank' in the glossary of the PRA Handbook.

A 'building society' is defined by the Building Societies Act 1986. According to this Act, a society may be established as a building society if its purpose or principal purpose is that of making loans which are secured on residential property and are funded substantially by its members. The 1986 Act also contains requirements regarding the constitution and powers of a building society.
