Governor's Response to the Chancellor's Statement on EMU
27 October 1997
I welcome the Chancellor's statement to Parliament this afternoon clarifying the Government's attitude to EMU. I welcome in particular the timetable set for possible UK membership and the prior conditions that will need to be met. It provides a much firmer basis on which British business can plan for the future.
I look forward to working with the other members of the Standing Committee that the Chancellor has set up to advise both government and business on the practical steps they need to take immediately, while the UK remains outside monetary union, and, would need to take in due course, in preparation for entry.
