The Angola (United Nations Sanctions) Order 1998

31 July 1998

Following the entry into force of UN Security Council Resolution No 1173 (12 June 1998), financial sanctions against UNITA (Uniao Nacional para a Independencia Total de Angola) have been introduced by the Government.

The Bank of England, on behalf of HM Treasury, therefore announces that permission from the Bank of England is now required for financial institutions in the United Kingdom to take any action which is likely to make any funds, financial assets or resources available to benefit any senior official of UNITA, or adult member of their immediate family or any person or body acting on their behalf.

Applications for permission or requests for further information may be referred to the Bank of England, Sanctions Emergency Unit, Threadneedle Street, London, EC2R 8AH.

Note for Editors

It is believed that the value of UNITA’s assets held by UK financial institutions is relatively small. Accordingly, the Bank has decided not to issue a formal Notice, but has instead written to the relevant financial institutions instructing them to block UNITA accounts.
