Publication of MPC Minutes

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England has decided that it will in future publish the minutes of its monthly meetings on the Wednesday of the second week after the meetings take place. Accordingly the minutes of the meeting which ended this morning will be published at 0930 on 21 October.

The reasons for the decision are explained in the attached letter from the Governor to Giles Radice, chairman of the Treasury Committee. The Treasury Committee recommended in a report published on 17 July that "the MPC should give serious thought to whether the minutes can be published earlier insofar as this can be done without lowering the quality of the minutes themselves or the quality of the debate they encapsulate."
The Bank of England Act 1998 says that the Bank "shall publish minutes of the meeting before the end of the period of 6 weeks beginning with the day of the meeting." Until now, the MPC has published minutes about five weeks after the meeting. The minutes of the September meeting will be published on 14 October as previously announced.
