Financial Sanctions - Burma/Myanmar

24 May 2000

Following the publication of EC Regulation No.1081/2000 in the Official Journal of the European Communities on 24 May (Ref L122/29), financial sanctions against Burma/Myanmar have been introduced.

The Bank of England, on behalf of HM Treasury therefore announces that with effect from 24 May 2000, all funds held by banks and other financial institutions in the United Kingdom, on behalf of the persons listed in Annex II to the Regulation, should be frozen.

Notes for Editors

As well as introducing a freeze of funds of named individuals, the Regulation prohibits the sale, supply and export to Burma/Myanmar of equipment which might be used for internal repression or terrorism.
