News Release
The Angola (United Nations Sanctions) Order 1998
14 December 2001
The Bank of England has today issued a Notice in respect of the financial sanctions regime against UNITA. The publication of a revised list of senior UNITA officials and adult members of their immediate families by the United Nations Security Council Committee (UNSCC) has prompted this action. Financial institutions are therefore requested to check whether they maintain any accounts for the persons listed and if so they should freeze the accounts. They are also asked to report their findings to the Bank of England.
Financial institutions are reminded that the scope of the financial sanctions extends not only to UNITA and the persons on the list issued by the UNSCC, but also to any person or body acting on behalf of a person on the list. If financial institutions suspect that they should freeze an account of a person or body who has not been named in the list, they are asked to contact the Bank of England for advice.
