Financial Sanctions: Burma/Myanmar

With the publication of Council Regulation (EC) No 1853/2004 in the Official Journal of the European Union (O.J. L323, p.11) on 26 October 2004, the Council of the European Union amended Council Regulation (EC) No 798/2004 of 26 April 2004 to introduce a ban on the financing of certain Burmese state-owned enterprises. All such Burmese state-owned enterprises were listed in the Annex to that Regulation, which became Annex IV to Council Regulation (EC) No 798/2004.
With the publication of Commission Regulation (EC) No 300/2005 in the Official Journal of the European Union (O.J. L51, p.13) on 24 February 2005, the Commission of the European Communities has amended Annex IV to Council Regulation (EC) 798/2004 by removing the names of the following nine companies:

4. MYANMAR HOTEL AND CRUISES LTD Address: Rm 814/815, Trader's Hotel, 223, Sule Pagoda Road, Yangon, Burma/Myanmar.
5. MYANMAR HWA FU INTERNATIONAL LTD Address: No 3, Main Road, Pyinmabin Industrial Zone, Mingalardon TSP, Yangon, Burma/Myanmar.

The Council of the European Union introduced financial sanctions against certain individuals related to important governmental functions in Burma/Myanmar with effect from 24 May 2000 (Council Regulation (EC) No. 1081/2000). As well as introducing a freeze of funds of named individuals, the Regulation imposed an arms embargo, a travel ban and prohibited the sale, supply and export to Burma/Myanmar of equipment which might be used for internal repression or terrorism. Following the expiry of Regulation (EC) No 1081/2000 on 29 April 2004, the restrictive measures against Burma were replaced by Regulation (EC) No 798/2004 with effect from 30 April 2004.
Council Regulation (EC) No 1853/2004 amended Regulation (EC) No 798/2004 by introducing a ban on the financing of certain Burmese state-owned enterprises.
