News Release
Financial Sanctions: Sudan

13 June 2006

This news release is issued in respect of the financial measures taken against Sudan.

The Bank of England, as agent for Her Majesty’s Treasury, issues this news release to advise that The Sudan (United Nations Measures) Order 2006 (S.I. 2006/1454) (‘the Order’) came into effect on 9 June 2006. The Order gives effect to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1591 (2005) adopted on 29 March 2005 and Resolution 1672 (2006) adopted on 25 April 2006. The Order revokes The Sudan (United Nations Measures) Order 2005 (S.I. 2005/1259) of 12 May 2005.

The measures in Resolution 1591 (2005) and Resolution 1672 (2006) include financial sanctions against those individuals who impede the peace process, constitute a threat to stability and break international law in the Darfur region of Sudan. The individuals to which the measures are to apply include persons designated by the Committee of the Security Council established under Resolution 1591 (2005) or listed in paragraph 1 of Resolution 1672 (2006).

On 26 May 2006 the Bank of England issued a News Release and Notice advising of the listing of four individuals following the publication of Commission Regulation (EC) No 760/2006. That Regulation is now enforced by The Sudan (United Nations Measures) Order 2006 (S.I. 2006/1454).
