Bank of England Statement on Tonbridge Robbery
22 February 2006
Following the major robbery of banknotes overnight from a cash centre at Tonbridge owned by Securitas Cash Management Ltd, the Bank of England is working closely with Securitas and the police. The Bank is relieved that the staff of SCM are safe and unharmed.
We have already been reimbursed by Securitas for the initial estimate of £25 million and any further sum will be reimbursed to the Bank as soon as the amount is known. There is no cost at all to the Bank or the taxpayer.
The Governor has set up a review of the security arrangements for the storage of banknotes.
