The
exchange rate and the MPC: what can we do?
(85k)
Speech by Sushil Wadhwani to the Senior Business Forum at the
Centre for Economic Performance
Argues that looking only at a two year ahead inflation forecast

impact on interest rates could enable a reduction in the volatility
of inflation.

Monetary
policy and the exchange rate
(13k)
Speech by Mervyn King at Euromoney International Bond Congress
Considers the implication of the recent rise in sterling for
inflation and interest rates. Argues that any coherent analysis
of the implications of a change in the exchange rate must consider
why the exchange rate has moved. Different explanations have
different implications for inflation and monetary policy. It
is for this reason, argues Mervyn King, that there is no mechanical
link between the exchange rate and domestic interest rates.
