Decision Maker Panel

In partnership with Professor Nicholas Bloom of Stanford University and Professor Paul Mizen of the University of Nottingham, the Bank of England has created the Decision Maker Panel of senior executives from across industries and from around the country.

In light of substantial UK and international economic uncertainty the Bank launched a new Decision Maker Panel in August 2016 to collect information on how business conditions are changing. This is a short monthly online survey that takes about 4 to 5 minutes to complete and aims to sample around 2500 companies each month.

The Decision Maker Panel will cover firms' year-ahead expectations and associated uncertainties regarding changes in their sales and prices; employment and costs; and borrowing and capital expenditure with each of the monthly surveys focussing on one of these three topics on a rotating basis.

The information provided in responses to this survey is very helpful for the Monetary Policy Committee in assessing the prospects for the UK economy. It helps the MPC to build up a picture of the outlook facing UK businesses which in turn helps to inform interest rate decisions. It will also be valuable for assessing the sectors, regions and firm types (e.g. small, young) most affected by uncertainty, where more immediate action to offer policy or institutional solutions may be required.

Senior executives from a wide variety of UK businesses are being invited to join the panel by dedicated teams with the first contact usually made by telephone.  The main recruitment team is based at the University of Nottingham with a smaller team operating from the Bank of England.  Businesses are selected so that the sample includes businesses of different sizes, industries and regions that is representative of the UK economy.  All information from panel members will be held in strictest confidence and will only be accessible to project team members who have signed confidentiality agreements.  The survey is being partly funded by the University of Nottingham’s ESRC Impact Accelerator Fund.

The Bank will publish aggregate results from this analysis in due course. These results will be aggregated so that individual responses cannot be inferred.

If you would like further information on the survey please contact the Programme Director, Garry Young (Garry.Young@bankofengland.co.uk, 020 7601 4792).
