Narrow money (notes and coin) and reserves balances - February 2017

01 March 2017

Narrow money (notes and coin) balances

Our notes and coin statistics show the amount of sterling banknotes and coins in circulation outside the Bank of England, including those held in banks' and building societies' tills.

These statistics are different from the series published in M4 and other balance sheet statistics. This is because the narrow money (notes and coin) statistics:

  • are compiled as an average of weekly observations (as opposed to an end-month position)
  • include all holdings of notes and coins, not only those held by the non-bank, non-building society private sector.

Reserves balances

Authorised banks and building societies can place cash deposits (known as reserves balances) at the Bank of England. These balances earn interest at Bank Rate.
