Analysis of bank deposits from and lending to UK residents
1st Quarter 2005
Lending to other financial corporations (OFCs) increased by £19.0bn, with a rise of £21.1bn in foreign currency partially offset by a net repayment of £2.1bn in sterling. Lending to non-financial corporations (NFCs) rose by £6.0bn. Within the sector, lending to real estate companies (a) increased by £7.7bn, the largest rise since the current series began in 1997 Q3. Public administration & defence made a repayment of £9.4bn. There was a modest increase in borrowing by a wide range of other non-financial sub-sectors, with some making small repayments.
Deposits from OFCs increased by £29.9bn in 2005 Q1, with foreign currency deposits increasing by £10.4bn. This is the largest increase since 2004 Q1. Deposits from NFCs increased by £6.4bn, with those from legal, accountancy, consultancy and other business activities increasing by £4.6bn.
