Consolidated worldwide external claims of UK-owned banks
End-December 2004

18 March 2005

UK-owned banks and their branches and subsidiaries worldwide reported an increase in consolidated foreign claims on an immediate borrower basis of $86.2 billion during Q4 2004, to stand at $2,117.8 billion. This was driven by a growth in claims on Developed Countries, with claims on the United States, Australia and Ireland having the largest increases. Foreign claims on Offshore Centres and Developing Countries also rose, with the former being the result of an increase in claims on Jersey and the Cayman Islands, while the latter was driven by Malaysia.

Foreign claims on an ultimate risk basis stood at $2,247.8 billion at end-December 2004. Developed countries had a net inward risk transfer of $177.0 billion with the largest inflows to Germany, France and the Netherlands. Offshore Centres and Developing Countries had net outward risk transfers of $41.3 billion and $5.2 billion respectively. The former was driven by net transfers out of Hong Kong and Singapore, while the latter was mostly due to net outflows from the Czech Republic, South Africa and China.
