Consolidated worldwide external claims of UK-owned banks
End-June 2005
UK-owned banks and their branches and subsidiaries worldwide reported an increase in consolidated foreign claims on an ultimate risk basis of $38.0 billion during Q2 2005, to stand at $2,469.9 billion. This was more than accounted for by a rise in claims on Developed Countries, with the United States, Italy, Spain and Germany increasing the most. Foreign claims on Offshore Centres and Developing Countries fell. The former was driven by a decrease in claims on the Cayman Islands and Singapore, while the latter was due to a decline in claims on India, Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China.
Developed Countries had net inward risk transfers of $150.8 billion, with the largest to Germany, France and the Netherlands. Offshore Centres had net outward risk transfers of $44.9 billion, driven by Hong Kong, the Cayman Islands and Singapore. Developing Countries had net outward risk transfers of $10.8 billion, mostly due to Mexico, Indonesia, South Africa and Kenya.
