Consolidated worldwide external claims of UK-owned banks
End-December 2006
UK-owned banks and their branches and subsidiaries worldwide reported an increase in consolidated foreign claims on an ultimate risk basis of $77.2 billion during Q4 2006, to stand at $3,228.3 billion. This was largely driven by a rise in claims on Developed countries, with notable increases against Japan and Spain while claims on Ireland, France and Australia also contributed. Increased claims on South Africa, with smaller contributions from Brazil, India and the People’s Republic of China, resulted in a significant rise in claims on Developing countries. Claims on Offshore centres also rose driven by Panama, the Cayman Islands and Singapore.
There were net inward risk transfers of $200.0 billion against Developed countries, with the largest against Germany and France. Offshore centres had net outward risk transfers of $56.8 billion, mostly due to the Cayman Islands and Hong Kong. Developing countries had net outward risk transfers of $11.2 billion, driven by Mexico, the People’s Republic of China, South Africa and South Korea.
