External business of banks operating in the UK
4th Quarter 2006
External liabilities of banks operating in the UK grew by $70.6 billion during Q4 2006, less than half the increase seen in the previous quarter. An increase in liabilities to Offshore Centres drove the movement, as deposits from Jersey increased. Liabilities to Developed Countries also rose, with notable increases against Japan, Ireland and the Netherlands, although these increases were tempered by a substantial fall in liabilities against Switzerland.
During Q4 2006, external claims of banks operating in the UK also rose, up $79.0 billion. This increase was driven by Developed Countries with sizeable increases recorded against Ireland, Spain, France, the Netherlands and the United States. Claims on Offshore Centres also rose, more than accounted for by the Cayman Islands. Claims on Developing Countries fell, driven by Taiwan, the People’s Republic of China and Russia.
