External business of banks operating in the UK
3rd Quarter 2006
External liabilities of banks operating in the UK grew by $144.4 billion during Q3 2006, a larger increase than the previous quarter, but much smaller than growth in Q1 2006. Liabilities to Developed Countries and Developing Countries increased, while liabilities to Offshore Centres decreased. There were notable increases against the United States, the Bahamas, Jersey and the Netherlands, while large decreases were seen against the Cayman Islands and Switzerland.
During Q3 2006, external claims of banks operating in the UK also increased, up $196.5 billion. Sizeable increases in claims were recorded against the United States, France and Ireland, while claims on the Netherlands fell significantly.
