Sectoral breakdown of aggregate M4 and M4 lending
December 2009

The household sector’s holdings of M4 rose by £2.8 billion in December. The annual growth rate fell to 2.3%.  M4 lending (excluding the effects of securitisations etc) to the household sector rose by £2.5 billion. The annual growth rate fell further, to 1.6%. Private non-financial corporations’ (PNFCs’) holdings of M4 increased by £1.3 billion; the annual growth rate fell to 4.2%. M4 lending (excluding the effects of securitisations etc) to PNFCs rose by £0.3 billion in December and annual growth was less negative, at -2.2%.  Holdings of M4 by other financial corporations (OFCs) fell by £27.2 billion and M4 lending (excluding the effects of securitisations etc) to OFCs fell by £4.7 billion in December.

PNFCs redeemed a net total of £2.2 billion from UK MFIs and capital markets in December, against a net £2.6 billion raised in November. Information on capital issues can be found in the Capital Issuance release of 21 January 2010.

M4 excluding intermediate OFCs fell by £7.6 billion in December, compared with a £14.0 billion rise in November. Three-month annualised growth was less negative, at -0.5%. M4 lending excluding intermediate OFCs rose by £9.1 billion in December, compared with a £15.6 billion rise in November.
Estimates of three-month annualised growth rates for July and August 2009 and estimates of twelve-month growth rates for off-quarter months are available on request by emailing mfsd_ms@bankofengland.co.uk .
