Lending to Individuals
December 2005
The increase in total net lending to individuals in December (£9.6 billion) was in line with that in November and £0.8 billion higher than the previous six month average (Table A). The twelve-month growth rate remained unchanged, at 10.2%.
Within the total, the increase in net lending secured on dwellings (£8.8 billion) was £0.2 billion higher than that in November and £1.2 billion higher than the previous six month average (Table A). The twelve-month growth rate continued to rise, to 10.4% in December. The number of loans approved for house purchase (122,000) was 6,000 higher than in November and the highest since May 2004. Approvals for other purposes also increased, by 1,000, but those for remortgaging fell by 2,000 (Table B).
The increase in consumer credit (£0.8
billion) was lower than in November. There was hardly any growth
in credit card lending in December, compared with a £0.3
billion increase in November, but other loans and advances rose by £0.8 billion in December, stronger than in November.
The annual growth rate of consumer credit continued to fall,
to 9.3% in December (Table A).
