Lending to Individuals May 2006
The increase in total net lending to individuals in May (£10.5 billion) was higher than the increase in April and also above the previous six month average (Table A). The twelve-month growth rate rose by 0.1 percentage points to 10.3% and the three month annualised growth rate also increased, by 0.3 percentage points to 10.4%.
Within the total, the increase in net lending secured
on dwellings (£9.3 billion) was above the increase in April and
the previous six month average (Table A). The twelve-month
growth rate increased by 0.1 percentage point to 10.9%. The
number of loans approved for house purchase (at 117,000)
was 11,000 higher than in April. The number of approvals
for remortgaging was also higher (by 7,000), but approvals
for other purposes were in line with April (72,000) (Table
B).
The increase in consumer credit (£1.2 billion) was higher
than in April (Table A). Credit card lending increased by £0.3
billion in May, in line with April, while other loans
and advances rose by £1.0bn (up from an increase of £0.6 billion
in April). The annual growth rate of consumer credit continued
to fall, to 7.2% in May.
