Statistical Notices should be received by all those responsible for the completion of Bank of England returns. To add names to the circulation list please contact the Domestic Banking Statistics Helpdesk (tel. 020-7601 5360 or peter.notman@bankofengland.co.uk).
This Statistical Notice covers the following topics:
- London Clearing House: Introduction of RepoClear (effective immediately)
- Country Codes - Amendment (effective immediately)
- Industrial Classification Queries (effective immediately)
- Questionnaire of next series of briefing seminars (by end-February )
- New telephone number and new internal address code (effective April 2000)
1. London Clearing House: Introduction of RepoClear (effective immediately)
In August 1999 the London Clearing House introduced RepoClear, a centralised clearing facility for repos backed by German government bonds. This was extended to include Belgium government bond repos in December 1999. Banks clearing repos through this facility, or through similar facilities introduced by the London Clearing House in future, should report their net positions with the London Clearing House as repos or reverse repos with other UK residents (Items 7H or 31H on the Form BT) with a sectoral classification of financial corporations (Items 7H1 or 31H1 on the Form BE), and an industrial classification of other activities and auxiliary to financial intermedation (Item 17B on the Forms AD and AL).
When banks switch to this reporting they should notify Rick Salmon of Domestic Banking Statistics Group at the usual address, and provide details of the gross positions and counterparties for that month only so that distortions to calculated flows can be removed from the aggregate data.
2. Country Codes - Amendment (effective immediately)
A country code list for electronic reporters was included within statistical notice 1999/07. It has since come to our attention that four country codes were missing from that list.

3. Industrial Classification Queries (effective immediately)
Classification queries relating to individual companies (ie. for completing Forms AD and AL) can often be resolved by reference to the "live search" screen at the Companies House website, which is available from Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm (BST).
The website can be accessed at www.companieshouse.gov.uk. Relevant information can be found by following the "free information" link.
4. Questionnaire of next series of briefing seminars (by end-February)
A questionnaire to be filled in by recipients of this statistical notice can be downloaded here. It aims to find out more about preferences for the next series of seminars for banks hosted by the Bank of England. Responses can be submitted by post, e-mail or fax and would be appreciated by the end of February 2000. The more responses received, the better the Bank of England will be able to tailor these seminars to meet customer needs.
5. New telephone number and new internal address code (effective April 2000)
In line with all other London area code changes, the Bank’s telephone number has changed and the old number will be unavailable after 22nd April this year. The new number is 020 7601 XXXX (XXXX denotes an individual’s extension). Some people have experienced difficulty whilst trying to use the new code, if you have any problems connecting to this new number, the Bank’s switchboard (020 7601 4444) will be able to put you through to the extension you require.
Also in April, Monetary & Financial Statistics Division will be moving from the 5th to the 4th floor of the Threadneedle Street building, our mailing address will therefore change to:

All paper versions of Bank of England forms will be amended in due course.
