Recent Developments in Statistics
In order to provide better information on the latest developments in underlying money and credit growth, the Bank has implemented a number of changes to its published statistical series. The changes are as follows
- The Bank of England has today placed a revised version of the Statistical Code of Practice on its website for public consultation. This article: explains why revisions to the Code are needed; summarises the main proposals for change; and invites readers to contribute to the process by providing feedback on the current draft text. The full consultation text for the revised Code is available at www.bankofengland.co.uk/statistics/about/code.htm.
- From January 2010 data onwards, loans held in securitisation vehicles will be included on monetary financial institutions' (MFIs') balance sheets for statistical purposes. Previously, some MFIs removed securitised assets from their own balance sheets, whereas others kept those assets on their balance sheets. The new, uniform treatment across all MFIs allows the Bank to collect more detail on securitised loans and on transactions between MFIs and their securitisation vehicles. - From the publication of January 2010 data in Bankstats on 1st March 2010, the Bank no longer publish separate statistics for banks and building societies. From this point forward only data series for a combined monetary and financial institutions (MFIs) sector is published. This change is being introduced to avoid disclosure of individual institution’s data following recent changes within the building societies sector. For more information see the Bankstats article "Changes to the Publication of Bank and Building Societies Statistics" published on 1st February 2010.
- The frequency of the statistical release Analysis of bank and building society deposits from and lending to UK residents has changed to monthly, from July 2009 data onwards. Deposits and lending data by industry are available in Tables C1.1 and C1.2 in Monetary and Financial Statistics respectively.
- Data for M4 and M4 lending excluding intermediate other financial corporations are available on a monthly basis, from July 2009 data onwards. These data are included in the Sectoral breakdown of aggregate M4 and M4 lending and in Table A2.2.3 in Monetary and Financial Statistics. For further details on these measures see the article 'Measures of M4 and M4 lending excluding intermediate other financial corporations' http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/statistics/ms/articles/art1may09.pdf
