Executive Director, Insurance Supervision

Biography

Gareth Truran took up the role of Executive Director for Insurance Supervision in May 2024. In this role, he is responsible for the PRA's supervision of over 500 UK insurance companies and branches of international insurers operating in the UK. 

From March 2020 to April 2024, Gareth was a Director in the PRA's Prudential Policy Directorate, where he was responsible for leading the PRA's policy work on insurance (including the Solvency 2 Review) and the PRA’s cross-sectoral policy on governance, operational resilience, accounting, reporting and disclosure issues. He also helped lead the development and implementation of the PRA's updated approach to policymaking under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2023. 

Prior to that, Gareth held a number of senior roles in the PRA’s Insurance Supervision Directorate. He was interim Director of Insurance Supervision from 2019 to 2020 and before that led supervision divisions covering the London Market sector, and retail and commercial general insurers. He also chaired the IAIS Supervisory Forum, bringing together senior insurance supervisors from leading global insurance markets to discuss industry trends and share supervisory practices.

Gareth joined the Bank of England in 1995 and in his early career at the Bank and at the Financial Services Authority he held a number of roles supervising banks, investment banks and insurance groups. He began his career at actuarial consultancy Bacon & Woodrow and holds an MSc in Mathematics from the University of Warwick.
