[a] As part of the Bank of England's reformed framework for implementing monetary policy, the Bank announced in May 2006 its intention to conduct open market operations to make outright purchases of gilts and high-quality foreign currency government bonds. The first of these gilt-purchase open market operations took place in January 2008.
