Admin History | The European Investment Bank (EIB) was established in 1958, by the Treaty of Rome, as a long term lending institution which contributes to the balanced and stable development of the EEC, particularly supporting European integration and the development of economically weak regions. The Bank finances its activities by borrowing on capital markets (both in and outside the EEC). Initially activities were confined to the Member States but later it included associated states and dependent territories.
The EIB is located in Luxembourg but is owned by the Member Sates and is therefore international and public. As shareholders, the Member States are represented on the Board of Governors and Board of Directors.
In 2000 the EIB became a member of the EIB Group (including its venture capital arm - the European Investment Fund). |
