DescriptionThe Government announced in October 1976 that Sir Harold Wilson was to chair a committee of inquiry into Britain's financial institutions. As a result this file contains useful overviews of the secondary banking crisis (fringe banking crisis) and the Bank's involvement. Includes submissions by the Bank to the Committee and background papers on the work of the Bank of England. Includes copies of Bank papers submitted to the Wilson Committee on: 'Savings and investment: Recent developments in financing arrangements', May 1977; 'The effect on companies' investment behaviour of frequent changes in Government policy', November 1977; 'The secondary banking crisis and the Bank of England's support operations', April 1978. Also includes evidence submitted by the Bank on supervision of financial institutions, including the following subjects: regulation in the City and the Bank of England's role; the supervision of banks and other deposit-taking institutions; supervision of the markets in money, foreign exchange, currency deposits and gold; supervision of the securities markets; and surveillance of the commodity markets; the Bank's accountability to the public interest; the role of the non-executive directors.
