TitleEXCHANGE CONTROL FILES: EFFECTS OF REMOVAL OF CONTROLS
Date1979 - 1986
DescriptionIncludes articles, papers, press-cuttings and correspondence relating to speculation regarding the reimposition of exchange controls post-1979. Other subjects include: inward and outward investment; exchange control in the main EEC countries (France, Belgium and Luxembourg, West Germany, Netherlands and Italy); structural changes causing a decline in self-regulation at Lloyd's 1983; portfolio outflows. This file includes an overview of staff at the Bank working on exchange control work at the time of abolition in 1979: 'The number of staff employed on exchange controls at the Bank of England declined during 1979 as exchange controls were relaxed. But at the beginning of October 1979, the month in which general exchange controls were finally abolished, 625 staff were employed in the Exchange Control Department'.
