TitleCHIEF CASHIER'S POLICY FILES: CITY/EEC (EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY) LIAISON COMMITTEE
Date1 Jun 1973 - 23 Dec 1987
Admin HistoryEstablished in 1973, the City/EEC Liaison Committee was conceived of as essentially a liaison body exchanging information and views. The principal object was to ensure that City of London organisations were fully informed on EEC matters, to identify areas of concern to more than one group and, where appropriate, to seek to find ways of dealing with them (on some specific problems small ad hoc working groups might be formed to clarify thinking or propose solutions).

The 'parent body' of the City/EEC Liaison Committee was the City Liaison Committee (see 6A395). It was intended that the City Liaison Committee would act as the senior City body covering both the domestic and overseas interests of the City as a whole. The City/EEC Liaison Group would operate at a more technical level on specific EEC matters.

The Bank of England's role was that of a coordinator (they provided the secretariat for both Committees) but the Bank were also able and willing to make a positive contribution in areas where they had competence. Through the Bank's involvement, it was also hoped that both Committees might contribute to the improvement of contacts between the City and Whitehall.
DescriptionThese files include the general records of the City/EEC Liaison Committee. They contain material regarding both the administration and meetings of the Committee (agendas, briefings, minutes and associated correspondence). They also contain papers and reports submitted to the Committee for their consideration and/or information.
