Description | Notes taken from half-yearly interviews with General Managers of Clearing banks on a wide variety of banking-related subjects, including staff salaries, equal pay, banking investments, credit cards, specifically: discussions with Barclays bank on the launch and initial impact of the Barclaycard (the first UK launched credit card), National Provincial's 'Travelcredit' card (a cheque-cashing facility introduced in Oct 1965), and similar schemes introduced by Midland Bank and Lloyds Bank (who brought in a Bankers' Card, which guarantees payment of holder's cheques and allows encashment for up to £30 at any branch of Lloyds and 11 other banks in the UK and Ireland), Lloyds and Martins bank issuing of American Express credit cards to approved applicants at a discount of £1 on the normal first year fee of £4:4s:-d, cheque card schemes, computerisation and automation; pre-interview briefing notes prepared by the Bank of England Economic Intelligence Department.
