| Description | This volume contains the Bank's compilation of subscribers to the original £1,200,000 in 1694 and the additional £1,001,171 10s. in 1697. (The latter being an engraftment onto the original capital made in tallies and bank bills, rather than in cash). Includes the names of the subscriber, amount subscribed and a reference number which relates to the original subscription books. Sometimes there is an indication of social status/occupation, but this is not consistent. Also contains a list of persons who paid part of their 20% on Bank Stock in accrued dividends; dividend tables, elections and Annual Fund of £100,000 (1694-1701).
The original subscription books (M1/1 for 1694 and M1/6-9 for 1697) contain reference numbers, the subscribers' signed name, address, social status/occupation, the name of the attorney - if the subscriber wasn't present, and amounts. In the case of the 1697 subscription there is a breakdown showing whether the amount was in tallies or bank bills (this also gives a breakdown of the number of tallies and any accumulated interest) and further reference numbers which possibly relate to the stock ledger or alphabet lists. In both cases some subscribers made several subscriptions, so the total number of entries is not equal to the total number of subscribers. (These volumes are often difficult to read as they were written in the subscribers' own hand, as opposed to a Bank clerk, which is possibly the reason why the Bank compiled separate lists - AC27/382). |
