TitleRECORDS RELATING TO THE PRESS OFFICE AND NEWS SUMMARY
Date1925 - 1985
Admin HistoryFor a history of the Bank's public relations, see Joan Bridges's monograph, ADM10/18. The first News Summary was apparently produced in about 1923 (page 78 of the monograph). The first outside expert to be recruited (clandestinely) by the Bank to help with press relations was L J Reid, who served for nine months from late December 1931 to October 1932 (pages 14, 66 and 77). The next to be appointed (apart from 'Ivy Lee' - see Bridges's second paper, page 37) was J B Rickatson-Hatt who joined the Bank in March 1941. See also G15/21.
DescriptionThe series contains papers on matters about which there have been enquiries from the press and others outside the Bank, or on which there were likely to be. The subjects are diverse, ranging from monetary policy to labour relations and to the history of the Picquet. There are also papers on the work of the unit and brochures issued by the Bank for the information of the public. (The Festival of Britain booklet, issued in 1950, is however in E6/8 and not here.) In addition there are files of press cuttings on Governor Montagu Collet Norman, Baron Norman, the Macmillan Committee, the Bankers' Manifesto and 'Going off the Gold Standard'.
