Title | CASHIER'S DEPARTMENT: RECORDS OF BANK NOTE ISSUE |
Date | 1706 - 1959 |
Admin History | The Issue Office was established in 1844, following the 1844 Charter Act. It dealt with every aspect of note issue: design, production, distribution, cancellation and destruction, and forgery and reproduction. On 22nd November 1928, the Issue Office amalgamated with the paying section of the Accountant's Bank Note Paying Office. The paying section of the Accountant's Bank Note Paying Office was duly re-named 'Issue Office - Banking Notes Paying-In Section' whilst the Issue Office simply continued to be known as the Issue Office, without any additional description (see p.32 of 2A137/1 for further details). |
Description | Mainly routine material dealing with individual claims for reimbursement on account of Bank notes reportedly lost, stolen, destroyed or mutilated. The initial action (save in the last case) was to request that payment be stopped. A small number of cases relate to similar claims on account of Bank Post Bills, Dividend Warrants and Coupons. |
