Admin HistoryA senior British stockbroker who works for the UK government. The government broker is authorised to purchase and sell government securities on the London Stock Exchange. She or he operates according to instructions received from the Bank of England and also serves as broker to the National Debt Commissioners. The government broker was senior partner of Mullins & Co. until 1986 when the Bank of England opened its gilt-edged division. Since then, gilt-edged market makers – authorised to deal directly in gilt-edged securities - have, for the most part, assumed the function of the government broker.

On 15 February 2016, the Debt Management Office's Chief Executive was officially appointed as the government broker,
DescriptionC132/1-75 comprise a single series of files, and came to the archives on the retirement of Sir Nigel Althaus, who was Government Broker from 1982 to 1989. Most of the files contain memoranda, correspondence, reports, notes and other papers from a variety of sources and have been grouped together by subject matter. Reference to the procedure followed for the appointment of the Government Broker can be found in C40/954 (Chief Cashier's Policy Files) and G1/14 (Governor's Files). Classification Scheme for C132/1-75 is as follows: 1-19 Government Broker's General Files; 20-25 Committee Files Involving Government Broker; 26-32 Files concerning Stock Exchange Administration and Finance; 33-47 Files concerning Stock Exchange Activities; 48-56 Files concerning Stock Issues, United Kingdom (UK) and Abroad; 57-62 Files concerning Outside Bodies; 63-72 Files concerning Investigations, Leaks etc; 73-75 Files concerning Nationalised Industries and Privatisation. C132/76-91 represent later deposits and have been not been incorporated into this structure.
