Admin HistoryBy 18 and 19 Vic 19 the Government was enabled to act as co-guarantor with France of interest payments on a £5m loan floated in 1855 by the Imperial Ottoman Government, partly secured on the annual tribute from Egypt and the Customs revenues of Smyrna and Syria. At the Chancellor of the Exchequer's request, the Bank acted as paying agents. Several shipments of sovereigns were made to Constantinople as the loan proceeds were drawn down.
