| Description | Papers arising from the Discount Office's monitoring of the activities of hire purchase companies originally for bill eligibility purposes and the Bank's involvement in hire purchase control through bank lending, and later through terms control. Most of the papers are newspaper cuttings which because of their concentration on a single subject represent a fairly comprehensive history of the development of this form of finance. They include original notes by Governor Montagu Collet Norman, and exchanges of correspondence with HM Treasury (HMT) , Committee of London Clearing Bankers (CLCB), Finance Houses Association (FHA), British Bankers Association (BBA), Accepting Houses Committee (AHC), and individual bankers and directors of finance houses. |
